First off, my boyfriend is the best guy in this world!
That being said, he knows I am Vegan (Obviously LOL) and knows that I have been eating very healthy so he likes to send me articles and videos on basically harmful food, fast food. Basically we love to read up on nutrition and what’s not healthy and then have a discussion on how we are disgusted by how we used to it so horrible … like … seriously.
Yesterday, he sent me to this site where there was an article about Soy. Seems like … soy is not really good for us. Let me take this back. Soy is great. Seems like having a large amount of it, can have some horrible consequences:
- The plant estrogens found in soy, called phytoestrogens, disrupt endocrine function, that is, the proper functioning of the glands that produce hormones, and have the potential to cause infertility as well as to promote breast cancer in adult women.
- Hypothyroidism and thyroid cancer may be caused by soy phytoestrogens.
- Infant soy formula has been linked to autoimmune thyroid disease.
- Soy has been found to increase the body’s need for vitamin B12 and vitamin D.
Unfortunately, I am being affected by this right now. I have gotten my first menstrual cycle last Thursday since becoming Vegan and it has not been good. The first 4 days were very light to the point where it did not seem I was on my period. And now I am on my 9th day! Yes 9th! I am now having a heavy flow (Which is the norm for me), and I am not experiencing ANY cramps whatsoever.
You may think having not having cramps is a great thing, but I don’t want to not have cramps because its a side effect of eating something I should not be eating.
I called my Gyno and spoke with her Nurse and she confirmed Soy can have a huge affect on our hormones. She also said if my period continues into next week to call back (and make an appointment).
I am really hoping my period stops soon because this is really scaring me.
No more soy for me!
